There existed a dilapidated old garage that no longer suited the client’s needs; they needed a six- bay garage as well as an office on the first floor, and guest quarters above. We decided to tear down the old garage and start new.
Two issues framed the essential design problem. First, up the hill, behind the carriage house is a property that will eventually be built upon. Second, the client’s house is an informal vernacular farmhouse whose character is comfortable but not grand.
We re-routed the driveway, and sited the carriage house to both serve as a buffer against the inevitable new house behind, as well as to define a vehicular approach to the farmhouse. Given the inherent size the carriage house, we decided to keep it’s form as simple as possible in order not to compete with the farmhouse.
